Scofield July 18, 2011

We arrived at scofield camp late in the pouring rain. We discovered that our mess tent was holey, not in a good way. We unloaded all of the gear onto a tarp and covered it with a tarp since our camp tarp was useless. We spent far too long in the rain trying to set up our tent (which we had never set up before). It took us 20 min just to get the rain fly on the right way so that the boys could get there gear inside.  Once the tent was up, we as leaders started to work on our our sleeping arrangements. I set up my hammock and Calvin set up his tent.  unfortunately we had boys who forgot thier sleeping bags and sleeping mats so we were in for a cold night.

It was interesting that as we rolled into camp we were staying in the same camp ground (formerly upper lookout) where I stayed in 1987 two years after the camp was opened.

I was especially impressed that the boys worked so hard to prepare camp.  Watching these young men run back and forth to the van to unload their gear. When their guear was done, they continued to run and ask what else they could do to help.

Bows are almost done

We have tilered several bows and they are coming out between 25 and 55 lbs depending on what the boys want. Even the 25-30 lb bows shoot very fast.

We also made a string jig and have made several Flemish Twist bowstrings out of spectra line.

We have set up a small shooting range in the back yard to try them with. I will get up some pictures shortly.

Bows

The past few weeks we have been working on our bows.
We have 10 red oak bows coming along. All 10 were measured by troop members, and then roughed out on a band saw and lightly sanded.

They all have fiberglass drywall tape backing and the last few have handles now
On to tillering the bows, making strings and going to shoot them at Salt lake archery

We will throw up some pictures soon.

Pepsi can hiking stove building

Today we learned about making Pepsi can hiking stoves and tried our hands at building one. Next week we will be learning about making a bow and starting in on the project. A link to a guide for purchasing the wood for the bow and building it can be found on the links page at http://trooptwo.blogspot.com/p/links.html
